A dangerous heat wave is expected across Santa Barbara County, with temperatures in the 80s and 90s likely to set daily records. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory until Friday night, predicting the hottest March since 1988.
Temperatures may reach 25 to 35 degrees above normal, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially among vulnerable populations like the elderly and children. Daytime highs will be particularly intense in the Santa Ynez and Santa Maria valleys.
While the current conditions won’t significantly increase wildfire risks due to moist vegetation, a prolonged heat wave could lead to an earlier start to fire season.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and wear light clothing during the heat. Staying informed about weather alerts and knowing the signs of heat exhaustion and stroke is crucial. Additionally, never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as temperatures can rise rapidly.
