Sri Lanka has transferred over 200 sailors from the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Bushehr after it requested assistance while outside Iranian waters. The sailors were taken to the Welisara Naval Base, where they underwent security and medical checks. Approximately 15 personnel remained aboard to assist in repairs. The ship was moved to Trincomalee and will remain under Sri Lankan control.
The transfer follows a recent incident where the U.S. submarine sunk another Iranian warship, Iris Dena, which raised tensions in the Indian Ocean. Only 32 of the crew were rescued, while 87 bodies were recovered. Iranian officials described the sinking as an “atrocity,” emphasizing the humanitarian implications.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the decision to assist the Iranian vessel was made in line with international law and humanitarian principles. He emphasized Sri Lanka’s neutrality amid escalating regional conflicts. Former foreign minister HMGS Parihakkala noted that the decision to respond to the distress call was a responsible action consistent with international maritime obligations.
The situation highlights Sri Lanka’s strategic position and its effort to maintain a neutral stance amidst growing geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, the Australian government confirmed that Australian personnel were aboard the submarine involved in the sinking but insisted that they did not contribute to the attack.
