Jean-Georges’ Tin Building, an upscale food hall at South Street Seaport, closed recently due to financial difficulties, as reported by Seaport Entertainment Group (SEG) in an SEC filing. The closure affects at least 150 employees, with options for 35% to 40% to transition to other roles within the company. Linda Romano, a supervisor, described her disappointment upon hearing the news and noted her severance offer.
Opened in 2022 as a culinary destination led by celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, the project faced financial troubles, losing over $100 million in four years. SEG plans to replace the food hall with the Balloon Museum, showcasing inflatable art, set to open this summer. The company has also been scrutinized for its business practices and recent employee layoffs, including more than 100 jobs lost during surprise employment authorization checks.
SEG will cease operations at the Tin Building and end its licensing agreement with Jean-Georges Restaurants, though it maintains a 25% stake in the group.
