Kirk Moore, the principal of Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma, is being hailed as a hero after he thwarted a potential tragedy by confronting and disarming a former student armed with two semi-automatic handguns. The incident, captured on surveillance video, occurred on April 7 when Victor Lee Hawkins, a 20-year-old former student, entered the school with the intention to harm students and faculty, inspired by the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.
Moore, who was shot in the leg during the struggle, acted quickly to charge at Hawkins and prevent further violence. His bravery is credited with saving many lives, as he threw himself on the suspect when Hawkins began firing. Fortunately, only Moore sustained injuries requiring hospital treatment.
Hawkins, who remains jailed on a $1 million bail, faces multiple charges, including firing with intent to kill. According to investigators, he initially aimed his gun at students in the lobby, but a malfunction spared them from immediate harm.
In the wake of the incident, the school emphasized its commitment to student safety, highlighting its years of preparedness for such emergencies. Moore expressed gratitude for the community’s support and reflected on his training and instincts that guided his actions during the crisis. He is recovering and looks forward to returning to work.
