A 16-year-old boy from Florida, Timothy Hudson, has been charged with murder and aggravated sexual abuse in the death of his 18-year-old stepsister, Anna Kepner, on November 6 during a Carnival cruise. Initially indicted in February, the case’s details emerged recently when it was unsealed, following a decision to charge Hudson as an adult.
Kepner’s body was discovered hidden under a bed in the cabin she shared with Hudson and two other teens. The cause of death was determined as mechanical asphyxia. Hudson, who has been living with his uncle since his arrest, has pleaded not guilty. Concerns have been raised by Kepner’s family regarding the severity of the charges in relation to his freedom.
A federal grand jury issued the indictment, and U.S. Attorney Jason Redding Quiñones emphasized the seriousness of the case involving crimes committed at sea. During a recent court appearance, Hudson wore a hat and hoodie, and his attendance at court was required to be monitored by an electronic tether. Prosecutors are seeking to reconsider his release in light of the new charges, while defense attorneys have a week to respond.
