Hampshire College in Massachusetts has announced it will permanently close due to declining enrollment and financial challenges. The board of trustees cited “financial pressures” worsened by external factors. Despite efforts to boost enrollment, refinance debt, and generate revenue through land sales, they concluded that progress in these areas was insufficient for long-term viability. The closure is set for after the fall semester, affecting mostly underclassmen who can transfer to partner institutions, while final-year students can complete their degrees with campus support.
Graduation ceremonies will continue in May, with additional ceremonies for December graduates. The college will refund deposits from all admitted students. Student Joan Priester noted this closure reflects a broader trend, with nearly 300 institutions shutting down between 2008 and 2023. Alumnus Ken Burns expressed sorrow, emphasizing that while this loss is profound, the spirit of Hampshire will endure.
