North Korea has announced the completion of a new housing area in Pyongyang for families of soldiers who died fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine. This initiative, led by Kim Jong Un, aims to honor these “young martyrs” and provide comfort to their families. During a ceremony on Saet-byul Street, Kim emphasized the importance of commemorating their sacrifice and expressed hopes that the new homes would allow families to live with pride.
In recent months, North Korea has increased its propaganda efforts regarding its troops’ involvement in the Ukraine war, even highlighting a new memorial in Pyongyang. Analysts view these actions as a way to bolster internal unity amid potential public dissent. Additionally, North Korea plans to send approximately 14,000 soldiers to support Russia’s efforts in Ukraine in 2024.
The construction of the new housing coincides with an upcoming ruling party congress where Kim is expected to outline his future goals for domestic and foreign policy. Analysts suggest that this housing project serves as a visual commitment to support the families of fallen soldiers and as a strategic move to justify troop deployments.
