American rock climber Alex Honnold recently free climbed Taipei 101, one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, without ropes or protective gear, completing the ascent in just over 90 minutes during Netflix’s “Skyscraper Live.” Despite the impressive feat, Honnold described his compensation for the climb as “embarrassingly small” compared to what mainstream athletes earn, stating it was in the “mid-six figures” but declined to specify further.
Honnold, known for his record-setting rope-free climbs, expressed he would have done the climb for free if he had the building’s permission, emphasizing his passion for climbing over financial gain. The climb, originally scheduled for Saturday but delayed due to rain, was broadcast live with a 10-second delay.
While climbing, he utilized an L-shaped outcrop at one corner of the skyscraper, facing challenges particularly at the 64th floor, known as the “bamboo box.” After reaching the top, he reveled in the breathtaking views of Taipei, despite the winds making it difficult to maintain balance.
