Severe Weather Team 2 is reporting on potential significant winter storms in northern Georgia this weekend, with meteorologist Brian Monahan providing updates. An Arctic air mass combining with moisture could lead to a winter mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow from Saturday into Sunday. Currently, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Texas to northern Alabama, with expectations that a watch may be issued for parts of Georgia soon.
Impacts are likely to be felt more in the northern half of Georgia, and although warming trends are noticed in the southern regions, the exact timing and amounts of precipitation remain uncertain. Governor Brian Kemp stated that preparations are underway, including road treatment and emergency management readiness.
Since 2014’s catastrophic snowstorm, Georgia has improved its winter weather readiness by using better technology and equipment, significantly increasing its brine storage capacity.
Residents are advised to prepare by protecting pets and plants as temperatures drop and insulating their homes to prevent freezing pipes.
