Cumberland County District Attorney Jacqueline Sartoris canceled a scheduled press conference regarding an anticipated U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigation in Portland. The Maine Judicial Branch’s court administrator advised against holding the press conference inside the courthouse to maintain neutrality on divisive issues associated with ICE. Sartoris planned the event to discuss the rule of law and compliance with Maine laws, alongside Portland Mayor Mark Dion and other officials.
Dion expressed local leaders’ opposition to a potential ICE operation targeting Portland and Lewiston, arguing there’s no evidence of unchecked criminal activity that warrants such federal intervention. He emphasized that the community rejects the notion of ICE agents in their neighborhoods. Governor Janet Mills echoed this sentiment in a video statement, cautioning the federal government against provocative actions that undermine residents’ civil rights. The situation is ongoing.
