TriMet plans to acquire the former Greyhound station in Old Town to convert it into a bus transfer facility, pending approval of funding reallocations. During a recent meeting, Trimet General Manager Sam Desue indicated that $4.1 million in federal funds earmarked for zero-emission buses would instead be used for this purchase, alongside an additional $7.9 million, totaling $12 million.
The facility will accommodate up to nine TriMet buses and aims to enhance safety for operators while fostering urban development in the area. This initiative aligns with a 2016 commitment TriMet made to the city to avoid using public roads for long layovers.
The site, currently owned by Transportation Realty Income Partners and listed at $10 million, is strategically located near Union Station and is expected to meet TriMet’s growing transit needs. TriMet aims to finalize the acquisition by summer 2025, with the board set to vote on the matter in January.
