Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Kirillo Budanov, the former chief of military intelligence, as his new chief of staff, following the resignation of Andriy Yermak amid a corruption scandal. Zelensky emphasized the need for a stronger focus on security issues, asserting Budanov’s experience in effective operations against Russia will be crucial.

Alongside this appointment, Zelensky plans to appoint Mykhailo Fedorov, the Minister of Digital Transformation, as the new Defense Minister, replacing Denis Shmyhal. Fedorov, known for developing a digital government platform, will also be tasked with training more drone operators to bolster Ukraine’s defense.

Yermak’s resignation came after his home was raided by anti-corruption authorities, although he has not been charged with any wrongdoing. This corruption scandal, involving allegations of embezzlement linked to senior officials, has strained Zelensky’s position and the country’s negotiating leverage amid ongoing discussions for a U.S.-led peace plan.

Overall, these leadership changes signal a strategic shift towards prioritizing national security in the face of ongoing conflict with Russia.
