A Brazilian research team has confirmed that the Joseph’s coat plant (Alternanthera littoralis) is safe and effective in reducing inflammation, relieving pain, and preventing arthritis. Conducted by scientists from the Federal University of Grande Dourados, the State University of Campinas, and the State University of São Paulo, the study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology involved a detailed chemical analysis of the plant’s ethanol extracts.
The research identified bioactive compounds and tested their anti-inflammatory effects. Laboratory experiments indicated that the plant extract significantly reduced inflammation and joint damage in animals, suggesting antioxidant properties and protection for joint tissue related to arthritis.
The findings contribute to the scientific understanding of the plant’s medicinal benefits and show a favorable safety profile for therapeutic doses. However, researchers caution against immediate clinical use, stating that further toxicity studies, clinical trials, and regulatory approvals are necessary before it can be widely used. The study emphasizes a commitment to promoting biodiversity and traditional knowledge in natural product research, with funding from FAPESP.
