Sherone Moore, the head coach of the Michigan football team, was fired for having an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member and subsequently taken into police custody on suspicion of assault. Although no formal charges have been filed yet, police are investigating. Athletic director Ward Manuel stated that the university found credible evidence of Moore’s misconduct, violating university policy.
Moore, who had served two seasons following a stint as an assistant coach, ended his tenure with a record of 17-8. He was preparing for the Citrus Bowl against Texas with interim coach Biff Poggi after his dismissal, which followed an anonymous tip that led to an investigation. Despite an initial finding of no evidence, new details emerged just before his firing.
Moore’s time as coach was marked by ups and downs, including a suspension related to a sign-stealing investigation. He had a five-year contract worth $5.6 million that offered some protection against termination for NCAA violations prior to his hiring, but misconduct could lead to firing. His last season included disappointing losses and controversies surrounding the program.
