Dick’s Last Resort, a renowned tourist spot in downtown Dallas, has permanently closed after 40 years. The restaurant, known for its cheeky ambience and Southern-inspired menu, closed its doors on November 30 due to underperformance and rising rent costs. Founded in Dallas in 1985 by Buffalo George Toomer and Richard “Dick” Chase, the restaurant showcased a rowdy atmosphere where customers experienced playful insults from staff, earning its reputation as a popular venue for bachelorette parties.
Initially thriving in the West End before moving near the American Airlines Center in 2005, Dick’s was notable for its relaxed vibe and unique dining approach, where food was often served in playful presentations like buckets. Although Chase faced legal issues in his role, the concept expanded into a national chain, with numerous locations across the United States.
Mike McRae, a long-time employee and owner of the Dallas location for 12 years, reflected on the quirky workings of the restaurant, including unconventional management styles and unique features like fake toilets. The restaurant was part of a larger ownership group based in Nashville in recent years before its closure.
