More than 1,400 Allegiant Airlines pilots are currently picketing at locations nationwide, including Des Moines Airport, due to ongoing contract disputes. They are demanding better wages, benefits, and working conditions, citing frustrations over stalled negotiations that have lasted over five years. Captain Tyler Heavey expressed concern that their pay is significantly lower—60% to 70% less—than other airlines, highlighting that Allegiant, one of the most profitable airlines, is not investing in its pilots.
Allegiant Airlines responded by stating they are committed to negotiating in good faith and have proposed a competitive contract that includes a 50% immediate wage increase, growing to 70% over five years, along with enhanced retirement and disability benefits.
While pilots prefer not to strike, they warn that if negotiations do not progress, they may resort to holding strike signs in the future. The National Mediation Commission is involved in facilitating discussions, with a potential strike timeline extending over the coming weeks or months.
