South Africa recently allowed 130 Palestinians without travel documents to enter the country after initially denying them entry. They arrived in Johannesburg from Kenya via a Global Airlines charter flight, having crossed from Gaza to Israel before their journey. None of them had applied for asylum, which contributed to the initial denial of entry.
The humanitarian organization Gift of the Givers assisted them with accommodation. While South Africa supports Palestinian statehood, it plans to investigate how the group was arranged to travel, as they were reportedly misled about their destination. Some had visas for other countries and have since left for those locations.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized the need to understand the situation’s origins but expressed compassion for the Palestinians. The government is assessing the situation in collaboration with various departments.
