Austria’s state-run train operator ÖBB announced it will discontinue its NightJet services from Paris to Vienna and Berlin starting December 14, due to a lack of government subsidies. However, European Sleeper will take over the Paris-Berlin route, launching on March 26, 2026, with three weekly departures from Gare du Nord. This new service aims to accommodate increased passenger capacity using vintage 1990s cars, offering about 600 to 700 seats. The initiative has been welcomed by advocacy group Oui au train de nuit!, which previously protested against the service cuts. Tickets are set to become available from December 16, 2025, starting at 59 euros for a couchette compartment.
While European Sleeper has faced some operational challenges, it continues to attract a significant number of passengers. The company hopes to introduce a dining car in the future, though profitability concerns remain.
