NBA guard Terry Rozier faces significant challenges after being arrested on federal gambling charges. His salary of approximately $26.6 million for the season is currently withheld pending the resolution of his legal issues. While the Miami Heat will not receive immediate salary cap relief, Rozier may still receive his full salary if exonerated.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, who was also arrested for gambling-related charges, has been placed on administrative leave. Billups has a contract extending to at least the 2026-27 season.
In related news, Rozier’s attorney stated that a federal tax lien totaling over $8 million for the 2021 tax year has been satisfied, clarifying that Rozier only owed a fraction of that amount. The lien’s status, however, remains unclear in public records.
Rozier, Billups, and around 30 others were arrested last week, with allegations suggesting Rozier may have conspired to influence betting outcomes in a game last March. An unusual betting pattern on that game drew the NBA’s attention, but the league reportedly found insufficient evidence to take action against him. Rozier maintains he is “not a gambler” and looks forward to clearing his name.
