Zoran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral candidate in New York, has vowed to embrace his Muslim identity in response to increasing attacks he labels as “racist and baseless” from former Governor Andrew Cuomo and others. Speaking outside a Bronx mosque, Mamdani recounted the humiliation faced by Muslims post-9/11, highlighting personal stories, including his aunt’s fear of riding the subway and an uncle’s advice to keep his faith private.
Cuomo accused Mamdani of “playing the victim” and denied the existence of widespread Islamophobia in New York. The tone of the attacks has raised concerns among some Democrats about potential Islamophobic sentiments in Cuomo’s campaign. In a conservative radio interview, Cuomo laughed at a comment suggesting Mamdani would support another 9/11 attack, while videos ridiculing Mamdani were posted and deleted by Cuomo’s campaign.
Mayor Eric Adams supported Cuomo, hinting that New York could face increased terrorist risks under Mamdani. Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa made false accusations about Mamdani’s affiliations. Despite the mounting criticism, Mamdani asserted his commitment to his identity and stated, “No more” to minimizing what he stands for. He intends to step out into the light of his beliefs rather than remain in the shadows, emphasizing that he will not shy away from his Muslim identity. Mamdani, who has garnered support from political figures like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, challenges Cuomo’s statements about Islamophobia in the city.
