Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a significant outage that affected numerous popular websites, including Amazon, Disney+, Reddit, and more. The outage began early Monday with AWS citing an “operational issue” impacting over 70 services. By 2:01 a.m. PDT, they stated they were working on recovery efforts and began seeing signs of progress. By 3:35 a.m. PDT, AWS announced the issue was fully mitigated, although some services were still experiencing throttling and backlogs.
Reports from users indicated disruptions across various platforms, including banks, airlines, and social media. Lloyds Banking Group and British government websites acknowledged issues related to the outage. While no cyber attack was detected, AWS’s problems were associated with a technical failure at one of its major data centers.
This incident highlighted the vulnerability of global technology infrastructure and emphasized the importance of having robust recovery plans in place for technical failures, not just cybersecurity threats.
