The Supreme Court has denied Alex Jones’ appeal regarding a $1.4 billion defamation judgment linked to his claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax. Jones contended that the judge improperly held him accountable for defamation and emotional distress without addressing the families’ claims. The Court did not seek responses from the victims’ families, and their lawyers asserted that the rejection was appropriate, looking forward to enforcing the jury’s decision.
Jones, who filed for bankruptcy in late 2022, described the judgment as an attempt to harass him and his family, claiming he lacks the funds to cover it. He is also appealing a $49 million defamation verdict from a similar case in Texas.
The Connecticut judgment arose from a default ruling against Jones due to his non-compliance with court orders. A jury subsequently determined the damages, leading to nearly $1 billion in total awards. Efforts to liquidate Infowars’ assets to satisfy the judgment have faced legal challenges, including an auction of its assets that was canceled due to procedural issues.
