Grand Central Terminal experienced a brief blackout on Thursday night, affecting both the top and bottom levels of the iconic facility from around 8:17 PM until power was restored by 8:53 PM. During the outage, several MTA workers were trapped in elevators and witnesses described a chaotic scene as cell phone lights illuminated the terminal. The blackout was attributed to a “drop in voltage” in the feeder network, but train services continued without interruption.
Five Metro North Railway employees required rescue after being stuck in an elevator during the outage. Witness accounts revealed that panic ensued, with people shouting and scrambling for safety, while some restaurant patrons remained unfazed, continuing their meals as the lights went out.
MTA officials, in collaboration with Con Edison, are investigating the cause of the power failure, which affected the daily influx of over 750,000 commuters passing through the station. No injuries were reported during the incident.
