Protean Electric is developing in-wheel motor technology that aims to enhance electric vehicle (EV) performance while potentially reducing manufacturing costs, leading to more affordable EVs. Unlike traditional EVs, which use centralized drivetrains, each wheel will have its own motor, simplifying vehicle design and improving dynamics such as traction and stability.
Despite its advantages, integrating motors into wheels poses challenges, including increased weight and exposure to harsh conditions, which could require more durable components. However, Protean believes that cost savings from eliminating complex mechanical systems can offset these issues.
Targeting production by 2026, Protean’s in-wheel motors are expected to deliver 220 kW and 2,500 Nm of torque, with plans for use in high-performance electric sports cars. The simplification of vehicle architecture may make EVs more accessible but will ultimately depend on production efficiency and quality control. The industry is closely watching how these innovations could transform EV design and pricing in the coming years.
