Canada has banned the Irish language band Kneecap from entering the country, citing concerns over the group’s past support for terrorist organizations. The hip-hop trio was scheduled to perform in Toronto and Vancouver in October. The ban follows charges against member Liam Ógó Hannaidh for displaying a Hezbollah flag, which Canadian officials described as contradictory to Canadian values.
Kneecap, facing allegations of amplifying political violence, labeled the ban as “serious” and is considering legal action against Congressman Vince Gasparo, who announced the restrictions. He stated that the band’s actions go beyond artistic expression and support violence and hatred.
The ban has received support from the Israeli and Jewish Affairs Centre in Canada, which praised the government’s decision. Hannaidh has previously dismissed the charges against him as politically motivated, claiming they aim to silence the group’s advocacy for Palestinian rights.
Kneecap recently cancelled their US tour due to Hannaidh’s legal issues and had anticipated significant attendance at their Canadian shows. The band, formed in 2017, has faced controversy for its performances, including one at Glastonbury, and has begun to attract larger media attention, evidenced by a semi-fictional film featuring actor Michael Fassbender.
