LG Electronics is facing backlash over pop-up ads appearing on its gaming monitors, specifically ads for McAfee antivirus software. The issue began on July 17 when users reported that their LG UltraGear monitors were automatically installing an app that displayed pop-up ads. Many voiced their frustrations on social media, leading to a response from Microsoft’s vice president, who announced that LG had agreed to disable these ads following intervention.
LG claimed that McAfee was not installed without user consent. The controversy has expanded beyond monitors, as LG has also been criticized for displaying advertisements on the home screens of its smart TVs. At the IAB NewFronts event, LG touted its advertising solutions, promising an integrated ad experience on its devices. While LG isn’t alone in serving ads through connected products—companies like Amazon and Samsung have faced similar issues—the strong negative response to LG’s approach raises questions about the future of intrusive advertising in consumer electronics. LG has been reached for further comments on its advertising strategy.
