Astrobiologist Adam Frank and NASA scientist Gavin Schmidt explored the profound question of whether advanced civilizations on Earth existed millions of years ago and faced climate change, leading to their “Silurian hypothesis.” This thought experiment postulates that if such civilizations existed, evidence of their technological footprint might be challenging to identify due to natural geological processes that erase signs over time.
Frank and Schmidt’s research draws parallels between past climate events, like the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum, and current human-induced climate change. They argue that while the Earth has experienced significant changes from natural phenomena, we cannot completely rule out the impact of previous intelligent societies.
Through their investigation, they suggest that chemical traces left by past civilizations, such as changes in atmospheric composition and remnants of plastics and heavy metals, could serve as potential evidence of advanced life.
