Monday’s federal court hearing was unexpectedly delayed when Luigi Mangione became trapped in an elevator at the Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse. Mangione, who faces two counts of stalking related to the murder of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson, was eventually escorted into the courtroom after a 30-minute delay, attracting attention in his tan prison uniform.
U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett announced that jury selection for Mangione’s federal trial is set to begin on January 5th, with opening statements on January 25th. The trial, initially scheduled for fall, was postponed due to a conflict with Mangione’s state murder trial starting September 8, where he faces second-degree murder charges and weapon-related offenses.
During the hearing, the judge discussed the challenges of selecting an impartial jury amid significant media coverage. She outlined a jury vetting process involving written questionnaires for potential jurors, focusing on bias and biographical details. Prosecutors raised objections to some proposed questions from the defense, emphasizing the need to balance fairness and juror privacy. The finalized jury will consist of 12 jurors and six alternates.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty, and the stalking charges could lead to a life sentence without parole.
