George Russell secured pole position at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix, benefiting from Max Verstappen’s crash during qualifying. Verstappen’s incident occurred as he spun into a barrier, allowing drivers like Russell, who was directly behind him, to capitalize on earlier lap times. Russell clocked a time of 1:06.113, marking his fourth pole of the season, despite lifting off to avoid a yellow flag.
Charles Leclerc qualified second with a time of 1:06.349, while fellow Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli was relegated to fourth after initially holding provisional pole. Verstappen’s best time in the session was 1:06.475, landing him in fifth place behind Russell and Leclerc.
Other notable performances included Lando Norris in sixth and Oscar Piastri in seventh, with Red Bull’s Isaac Hajjar and Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad rounding out the top ten. Verstappen faced early challenges in Q2, slipping down to tenth before struggling to advance.
Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon faced difficulties, qualifying 17th and 18th, respectively. The debuting Cadillacs showed improvement, with Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas ending up 19th and 20th. Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll filled the back row for a third consecutive session.
