A major sinkhole at LaGuardia Airport has prompted the temporary closure of one of its main runways, leading to significant travel disruptions during the busy Memorial Day weekend. This incident resulted in 24 flight cancellations and 17 delays, affecting thousands of travelers. The sinkhole, approximately 2 inches deep, was detected during a routine inspection near Runway 4/22. Airport officials stated that the closure was a precautionary measure, emphasizing there was no immediate safety concern. Currently, flights are experiencing an average delay of 48 minutes, but this is expected to improve.
The runway is set to remain closed until Thursday morning as crews work to assess and repair the issue. This incident marks the second runway shutdown in less than a month due to similar pavement concerns. Passengers are advised to check their flight status with airlines during the ongoing repairs.
