At South Station, summer street closures and parking restrictions impacted drivers along Atlantic Avenue and Essex Street as fans traveled to Boston Stadium for the World Cup game between Iraq and Norway. Restrictions lasted until 5:30 PM on Tuesday, with police directing traffic on Summer Street to alleviate one-way backups. One driver noted that a short drive now took nearly 10 minutes due to the congestion.
Commuters heading to Boston were directed to a separate platform from fans heading to Foxboro. Many allowed extra time for potential disruptions. Some, like Krista Dragas, arrived 45 minutes early to avoid long lines. Paul Kelly, a commuter from Canton, remarked on the smooth logistics provided by the MBTA, praising their efficiency compared to a previous match when crowd congestion was higher.
Although over 19,000 fans traveled on the MBTA for a Saturday game against Haiti, only 11,000 fans did so for the Tuesday game, thanks in part to early train departures and improved boarding processes at Foxboro. Overall, the MBTA’s changes for the weekday match appeared to be effective.
