At least 12 people were injured in a gunfight near the Old West End Festival in Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday, with some attendees seeking cover while others helped victims. The shooting, involving at least two individuals firing at each other, left two victims in critical condition. The injured, aged 14 to 61, were treated on-site, though getting ambulances through heavy traffic posed challenges.
Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan confirmed a suspect was in custody and urged festival-goers to share any videos or photos that might assist the investigation. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed concern, emphasizing that summer festivals should be safe family events. On social media, videos showed chaotic scenes amid the gunfire. Kevin Berry, a Navy veteran present at the festival, reported seeing gunshot victims and trying to assist, while city officials debated the festival’s continuation despite the incident. City Safety Director George Krall lamented the impact on Toledo’s iconic festival season.
