Anthony Odion, a Roman Catholic priest involved in establishing a healing chapel in Louisiana, had his name removed after being convicted of sexual assault in Texas. Prosecutors identified multiple victims who claimed he misused his spiritual authority to pursue relationships with female parishioners.
Odion, 57, helped raise $600,000 to build the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 2020 while serving as pastor at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Despite his contributions, black tape now covers his name at the chapel due to his conviction.
Prior to his trial, Odion faced allegations of sexual misconduct and had been suspended from public office. Victims recounted experiences of coercion and manipulation, leading to a police investigation that revealed a pattern of inappropriate behavior toward female congregants.
At the trial, several women testified against him, detailing his inappropriate advances. The jury found Odion guilty on all charges in just two hours. This case adds to a troubling trend within the Archdiocese of New Orleans, where multiple clergy members have faced similar convictions.
As sentencing approaches, local authorities are proceeding with removing Odion’s name from church properties, symbolizing the church’s attempt to distance itself from his misconduct.
