During Sydney’s Vivid Festival, an unexpected incident occurred when nearly 90 drones crashed into Sydney Harbour, leading to the cancellation of the show. The drones were part of a performance featuring 1,000 specialized devices. As the show began, 89 drones separated and fell into the water, causing chaos among the thousands of spectators. Organizers assured that public safety was prioritized and that no injuries were reported.
The drone company, Skymagic, attributed the crash to an “unexpected change” in radio frequency, which triggered fail-safe landing protocols. They confirmed there was no sign of foul play, and investigations are ongoing. While previous drone tests and rehearsals had shown stable performance, this incident mirrored a similar occurrence in Melbourne, where over 400 drones fell due to strong winds.
Apologies were issued to attendees, and a safety assessment is currently underway. The next scheduled drone show, part of Vivid’s three-week festival, is planned for Sunday, pending safety evaluations.
