Media Molecule, known for the LittleBigPlanet series, has been quietly developing a new project as support for their user-generated platform, Dreams, ends in September 2023. The studio’s next title will be an entirely new IP, described by former creative director Mark Healy as “more like a game than a creative tool,” indicating a shift towards a more traditional gameplay experience.
Recent insights from developer portfolios suggest the new game will feature “open world content.” One developer’s resume indicates responsibility for “various open-world content,” hinting at a larger, more non-linear format than past Media Molecule games. Other design duties, including “levels blocking key POIs and fodder design,” imply potential resource gathering and crafting mechanics.
The development comes amid challenges, as the studio plans to lay off about 20% of its staff due to significant strategic changes. This new focus could signal a transformative phase for Media Molecule, known for its “play, create, share” philosophy. However, as with any early-stage project, details may evolve before an official announcement is made.
In related PlayStation news, updates on Santa Monica’s God of War spin-off were also mentioned.
