In an indictment filed Sunday, New Chicago Police Chief Earl D. Mayo, 45, is accused of stealing firearms seized during a police raid and selling them to a pawn shop in Hobart, as well as possessing anabolic steroids. Tanika Roshawn Borders, 47, is charged with aiding Mayo.
Mayo faces seven felonies, including counts of theft, official misconduct, and unlawful steroid possession, along with a misdemeanor theft charge. He is currently held at Clark County Jail in Ohio after being arrested. The charges originate from a Lake County police investigation beginning in late April after a stolen handgun was traced back to Mayo, revealing he sold it to Mega Cash Pawn.
Mayo reportedly asked another officer to buy the gun back and retrieve suppressed firearms from his home, implying that there were items “federal authorities” wouldn’t find. Borders is accused of attempting to buy back a gun Mayo sold and trying to remove anabolic steroids from his possession.
Mayo had a misdemeanor theft conviction in 2000 and was appointed police chief in January 2023. Authorities have placed him on administrative leave, while Lake County Police have assumed security duties in the town. His father, Jerry Williams, is the Democratic candidate for Lake County Sheriff and expressed that Mayo must accept responsibility if found guilty.
