Gio Reyna has been chosen for the U.S. men’s national team’s 26-man roster ahead of the World Cup, despite past controversies and limited playing time with Borussia Mönchengladbach. Coach Mauricio Pochettino recognizes Reyna’s potential, having played 509 minutes in the Bundesliga this season and scored once in his last five games. Other players selected include Brenden Aaronson, Mark McKenzie, Matt Turner, and Sebastian Berhalter. An official announcement is set for Tuesday.
Reyna, who participated in the 2022 World Cup, expressed his eagerness to represent the U.S. again. Sebastian Berhalter, son of former coach Gregg Berhalter, is also included after impressive performances in recent camps.
Notably, Diego Luna and Xavier Gozo from Real Salt Lake will not be part of the squad, with Luna’s omission standing out due to his prior contributions to the national team. Aaronson, McKenzie, and Turner bring experience to the squad, with Turner’s recent strong performances in MLS enhancing his selection. The final roster will be submitted to FIFA by June 1, with conditional changes allowed only for serious injuries or illnesses.
