Ebony Parker, a former elementary school assistant principal, faced legal scrutiny after a 6-year-old student brought a gun to school, leading to a shooting that seriously injured teacher Abby Zwirner. Parker was charged with eight counts of felony child neglect for allegedly ignoring warnings about the student’s possession of the firearm. However, Circuit Judge Rebecca Robinson ruled that Parker’s actions did not constitute a crime, dismissing the charges.
During the trial, testimonies revealed that Parker had been informed of the potential presence of a gun but could not leave her office as searches were conducted. Zwirner testified that the student had been acting suspiciously before the shooting. Zwirner endured significant injuries, including six surgeries, after being shot.
Experts noted that it’s rare for school officials to face criminal charges following such incidents. In a separate civil trial, Parker was found liable, resulting in a $10 million judgment against her. The child’s mother received a nearly four-year prison sentence for related charges. Parker has since left her position at the school.
