Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) announced a licensing agreement that will enable Spotify to develop a generative AI music model. This model will allow fans to create covers and remixes of songs from UMG’s artists and songwriters. The agreement, revealed during Spotify’s Investor Day on May 21, is expected to generate new revenue streams for artists and enhance discovery for UMG’s talent. Although no release date is specified, these AI features will eventually be available to premium users for a fee.
This agreement aligns with Spotify’s earlier partnerships with major music companies to create “artist-first” AI music tools. Spotify has established a generative AI research lab to support this initiative and has outlined four principles for AI development, emphasizing the voluntary participation of artists and songwriters.
Remixing has become a focal point in generative AI music development, gaining traction as a way to engage fans rather than compete with existing artists. In a statement, Spotify co-CEO Alex Norstrom emphasized the importance of solving challenges related to fan-made content, while UMG’s CEO Lucien Grainge highlighted the initiative’s focus on enhancing connections between artists and fans, and creating new revenue opportunities centered around responsible AI use.
