The Long Beach Pride Festival was canceled the day before it was set to begin due to the city’s concerns about safety information not being provided in time by the organizers. The city stated that it could not issue a permit necessary for the event, emphasizing the need for compliance with public safety standards. Despite the cancellation, the annual Pride Parade will proceed as scheduled.
Tonya Martin, president of Long Beach Pride, expressed disappointment, arguing that the city should do more to support vulnerable communities rather than canceling an important event. The festival was meant to feature live music, art, and food, but the city noted that repeated attempts to coordinate with the organizers failed, highlighting the lack of required documentation for safety reviews.
Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson mentioned challenges such as the last-minute withdrawal of festival vendors and emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting Pride celebrations. The city will reimburse businesses that incurred costs for permits associated with the festival.
