A Philippine senator, Ronald Dela Rosa, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity, has fled from the Senate to evade arrest. The escape occurred amid confusion following gunfire during an altercation involving security at a nearby building. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged calm as police investigate the circumstances of Dela Rosa’s escape.
Senate President Alan Cayetano stated there was no obstruction of justice and insisted Dela Rosa was free to leave since there was no current ICC arrest warrant against him. Critics, however, have called for accountability regarding his flight.
Dela Rosa, a former police chief, faces charges linked to a brutal anti-drug campaign during Rodrigo Duterte’s presidency, where he allegedly oversaw the killings of at least 32 individuals. He has contested the legality of the ICC warrant and requested the Supreme Court to halt its execution. The political conflict also ties into tensions between the Duterte family and President Marcos, with Vice President Sara Duterte making grave accusations against Marcos. An impeachment court for the vice president’s trial is set to convene soon, indicating ongoing political turmoil in the country.
