A federal jury in Chicago awarded $49.5 million to the family of Samya Stumo, a 24-year-old killed in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash, one of two fatal incidents involving Boeing 737 MAX jets that claimed 346 lives. The verdict marks the resolution of one of the last lawsuits linked to these crashes. Samya was on her way to a medical mission in East Africa when the plane went down.
Boeing had already acknowledged responsibility for the accident, leading to a trial focused solely on the compensation amount. The company previously settled numerous lawsuits and reached an agreement with the Justice Department to avoid criminal charges.
The jury awarded Stumo’s family significant damages: $21 million for the crash experience, $16.5 million for the loss of a friend, and $12 million for grief. Boeing expressed deep apologies for the tragedy and acknowledged the families’ rights to pursue legal claims. Stumo’s family continues to advocate for accountability from Boeing and regulators.
