Sound Transit recently held a board meeting addressing its $35 billion budget deficit, leading to significant project delays. Key projects affected include the Ballard Link extension and the postponement of the South Kirkland to Issaquah link until 2050. Additionally, the retirement of Sounder North service is planned for 2033, along with cancellations or delays of various park-and-ride upgrades in multiple locations.
During a discussion on KIRO News Radio, co-host Jake Skorheim expressed frustration over the management of Sound Transit, suggesting that someone should be held accountable, possibly even fired, due to mismanagement. His co-host, Spike O’Neal, noted that the current board consists of mainly new members not responsible for previous decisions.
Skorheim raised concerns about whether Sound Transit truly wants residents to utilize the transit system, given the ongoing delays. He questioned the agency’s ability to secure additional funding for projects, especially as previous plans proposed a budget of around $50 billion, which has escalated significantly. He warned that Sound Transit may now have the ability to increase taxes without public consent, further complicating accountability for the agency’s financial woes.
