Infowars.com, the far-right conspiracy website run by Alex Jones, has gone offline as part of a takeover by The Onion, which plans to transform it into a parody site. The Texas Court of Appeals recently granted a temporary motion to block Jones’ attorneys from preventing The Onion’s access to the Infowars domain due to ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. The Onion, under its parent company Global Tetrahedron, is set to pay $81,000 per month for six months for licensing the domain, with all proceeds intended for the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims, who previously won a $1.4 billion defamation lawsuit against Jones.
In light of the shutdown, The Onion’s CEO, Ben Collins, expressed excitement on social media. Jones, despite the closure, continues to share content on other platforms without using the Infowars brand. The Onion aims to create a new digital platform that will support comedic voices while marking a significant shift in Infowars’ legacy. A bankruptcy auction to acquire Infowars’ assets has faced legal challenges, and The Onion has even started selling rebranded Infowars merchandise in preparation for its new direction.
