Severe weather threats have increased for southern Illinois, with afternoon storms anticipated. The Storm Prediction Center has indicated a moderate risk (Level 4/5) for severe supercells and potential tornadoes developing from Missouri into Illinois. While there are already thunderstorms occurring this morning, the main risks are expected from 2 PM to 10 PM, particularly between 4 and 8 PM, when stronger supercells may form.
The St. Louis National Weather Service emphasizes the uncertainty surrounding the morning storms and their impact on afternoon conditions. A significant tornado threat exists, with a 15% to 29% chance for tornadoes across southern Illinois to the Mississippi Valley, particularly centered on the St. Louis area, which faces increased risks of EF3+ tornadoes.
Additionally, there’s a 45% chance of high winds, and late evening storms may shift to a mix of supercells and line segments, increasing the risk of strong winds and potentially weak tornadoes. There is also a 30% risk of hail reaching 2.5 inches or larger. Further updates are expected around 11:30 AM CDT as conditions evolve.
