A Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta to Portland became the unlikely delivery room for a pregnant passenger who gave birth to a healthy 5½-pound baby girl, Brielle Renee Blair, just before landing. The incident occurred when Ashley Blair, who was on her way to Oregon for a family birth, went into labor about 30 minutes out.
Two paramedics on the flight, Tina Fritz and Karlyn Powell, were approached by flight attendants as they were already tending to another passenger’s medical needs. With limited supplies, they improvised by using shoelaces to tie the umbilical cord and borrowed blankets from other passengers. As the plane prepared to land, Blair successfully delivered the baby just before touchdown.
Local emergency responders met the family at the airport, and both mother and child were reported healthy. Delta praised the efforts of the flight attendants and volunteers, while Fritz noted a lasting connection with Blair due to the extraordinary experience.
