Archaeologists at Pompeii have recently employed artificial intelligence to digitally recreate the face of a man who perished during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This reconstruction, developed in collaboration with the University of Padua, is based on archaeological findings from near the Porta Stavia cemetery.
The digital portrait depicts a male figure fleeing with a shallow bowl as a shield against the falling volcanic debris. Found alongside remains of another individual, the man likely succumbed to the eruption’s early stages. His possessions included a terracotta mortar, an oil lamp, a small iron ring, and ten bronze coins, shedding light on his last moments and daily life before the disaster.
Pompeii Park Director Gabriel Zustriegel emphasized that using AI enhances the accessibility and emotional impact of archaeological research while preserving its scientific integrity.
