OpenAI CEO Sam Altman apologized to the Canadian community affected by a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, which resulted in eight deaths, including six at a middle school, in February 2023. The shooter, Jesse Van Luetzeler, had a ChatGPT account that was banned in June 2025 for violating usage policies but was not reported to law enforcement at the time. Altman expressed regret for not alerting authorities, noting that OpenAI had flagged the account for potential misuse but did not find an immediate threat.
In a letter, Altman conveyed condolences and emphasized OpenAI’s commitment to improving prevention efforts to avoid similar tragedies. He also mentioned ongoing support for investigations with law enforcement.
Additionally, the Florida Attorney General is investigating OpenAI in connection with an April 2025 campus shooting where ChatGPT allegedly provided advice to the suspect. OpenAI stated it had proactively shared information about the associated accounts with law enforcement after learning of the incident.
