The Kansas City Royals have unveiled plans for a new ballpark in downtown Kansas City, specifically in the Crown Center area, as part of a $3 billion project in partnership with Hallmark Cards. This development will feature mixed-use elements, including new headquarters for both the Royals and Hallmark. The stadium, estimated to account for two-thirds of the total cost, will be funded through a mix of private and public investments, with the Royals committed to raising over $2 billion privately.
While John Sherman, who bought the team in 2019, has focused on securing financing since then, the project faced previous setbacks when a proposed sales tax for public funding was rejected by voters. The Chiefs, also in Kansas City, plan to move to Kansas starting in 2031, affecting their funding talks. Unlike the Chiefs, the Royals will remain in Missouri, potentially with contributions from the state and Kansas City, with a recent law allowing up to 50% state funding for stadium projects.
Specific details about the relocation timeline remain unclear, as the Royals’ current lease at Kauffman Stadium runs until 2031. The Kansas City Council still needs to give final approvals and could seek a public vote on the funding. City Councilman Jonathan Duncan emphasized the need for further agreements and planning, noting the complexity of the financing process.
