The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that federal disaster assistance is now available to Washington state due to severe weather from December 5 to 19, 2025, which caused extensive damage from storms, winds, floods, landslides, and mudslides. Assistance will be provided to residents in multiple counties, including Chelan, King, and Pierce, as well as several tribal communities.
Residents can apply for individual assistance to cover temporary housing, home repairs, and uninsured property losses. They are encouraged to first file claims with their insurance companies, after which they can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling FEMA.
Besides individual aid, federal public assistance funds will support emergency work and repairs for states, tribes, and eligible local governments. FEMA’s designated federal coordinator for recovery efforts is John F. Harrison.
In Whatcom County, particularly affected areas like Sumas and Everson, recovery efforts are ongoing. Local leaders express concerns about rising insurance costs and the psychological toll of repeated flooding on residents. While FEMA assistance is seen as crucial, it may not fully resolve individual financial challenges.
Community organizations like Whatcom Long Term Recovery Group are working to support families in need. They’ve emphasized the importance of meticulous documentation for those seeking federal funds. However, the timeline for when assistance will reach communities remains unclear. There are also calls for state-level support to expedite recovery efforts and improve housing access for those repeatedly impacted.
